it comes to the fiscal cliff. there are no major discussions going on right now about what to do now that talks between the president and the speaker appear to have stalled. in fact, the president and senate majority leader harry reid were both here in honolulu yesterday for the funeral of hawaii senator daniel inouye. we're told they didn't really discuss what to do next. before he left washington the president urged leaders to craft a sort of scaled down plan that simply extends the bush tax rates for the middle class and extends long-term unemployment benefits for another year. but, jeff and rebecca, it's really unclear whether even a package like that could pass both houses of congress. so the president is going to be cutting his vacation short and heading back to washington midweek to work with congressional leaders. at that point, as you know very little time left to get a deal only about five days. >> the pressure will be on. no do-overs for this one. nancy, i want to turn to michael crapo and his dui. what kind of details are emerging on that? >> reporter:

negotiations are looking better to avoid going over the fiscal cliff at 9:00 p.m. our time. as kyla cam billion reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, there's still a gap on raising taxes. >> reporter: republicans and democrats both say these negotiations are moving forward. the house is back at work this hour and we expect to hear from the senate when they start their day in about 45 minutes everyone the big et problem that needs to be -- biggest problem that needs to be solved is deciding who should pay more in taxes. democrats offered to raise taxes on households making $450,000. republicans were still hoping for the $550,000. but republicans dropped their demand to cut social security benefits. at that point, joe biden and mitch mcconnell took over negotiations. the two worked together in the senate for 23 years and have a strong history of finding compromise. >> i think there's some good news. the conversations continued late into the night last night. i think now there is a better than 50/50 chance that we will avoid the fiscal cliff by midnight tonight. >> reporter: if the senate co

. there's the markets this morning. down about 83 points and everyone is blaming it on the fiscal cliff and watching washington and hoping they can find middle ground as we approach the ever impending dead line. well another sign that the housing market is improving the national association of realtors says pending home sales rose last month so it's highest level in two and a half years. pending sales rose nearly 2% in november and it's the third month in a row it has gone up. amazon says it had a very green christmas season. it announced it's 2012 holiday sales were the biggest ever. they had several record setting days including cyber monday when customers ordered 26 and a half million products. amazon isn't giving exact numbers but says sales of the kindle devices are it's top overall setters and says they set a record for digital downloads on christmas day and e reading is gaining popularity on all devices. nearly one quarter of all americans downloaded and read a book on an electronic reader this year up 7% from last year and the number of people reading traditional books dropped
